Question: Can my pension money be transferred if I go to work for another city, the state, a different state or the Federal government?
Answer: Within Massachusetts, inform the Retirement Board of the City, County or State in which you are now employed, that you have retirement money and service with the City of Somerville. This will trigger a process by which your money will be transferred from the Somerville Retirement System (SRS) to the new Retirement Board of the City, County or State where you are now employed.
If you move to a different State, contact the Retirement Board of the public entity where you are employed. If they allow the purchase of service earned out-of-state, they will inform you of their requirements.
If you work for the Federal Government, you cannot transfer your retirement funds to a federal retirement program.
